Just reading this article on the human element of music categorization, it struck me that those studying both music and libraries could be perfect for the work they’re describing. How can I like Katy Perry and Neko Case but not Taylor Swift? Because Neko Case is alt-country and Taylor Swift is pop-country. Saccharine Katy Perry is tolerable but Taylor Swift is not. Algorithms can’t always identify social groups and their nuances.
The article also linked to an interesting slideshow of Pandora’s music analysts.
EDIT: It’s hard to note that the only woman featured in the slideshow is a prop, posing as an upright bass (or cello?) on Slide 8. Does Pandora not have any women music analysts?
